Institute Renamed

Dear Sir or Madam,

During the past few years, the Fraunhofer ITA has built up two new research and work areas: Drug Research and Medical Biotechnology on the one hand, and Clinical Allergy, Asthma and Inhalation Research on the other hand. The wide range of contract research and services has increasingly focused on the investigation of effects and mechanisms of action by which environmental pollutants and pharmaceuticals affect human health.

The Institute’s old name did not convey this enhanced competency, and the subtitle we have used so far was only an intermediate step on the way to a modification of the Institute’s name. We have now accomplished this modification: Starting in 2003, the name of the Fraunhofer
Institute in Hannover is:

Fraunhofer Institute of Toxicology and Experimental Medicine (Fraunhofer ITEM).

The Department of Drug Research and Medical Biotechnology is focused on molecular and mechanistic toxicology, molecular medicine and in particular on pharmaco- and toxicogenomics.

The focus of the Department of Clinical Allergy, Asthma and Inhalation Research are volunteer studies for clinical research and development, as well as environmental and workplace issues.

The area of Toxicology and Environmental Hygiene, the well-established and internationally recognized focal point of our research for more than 20 years, will continue to be one of our main pillars, together with Aerosol Research. The inhalation of substances and the respiratory tract as a primary target organ will remain our priorities.

All these work areas of the Institute excellently complement each other in the research of both intended and unwanted effects on human health.

The name has changed. What remains unchanged is our competency.

Yours sincerely,

Prof. Dr. Uwe Heinrich
