January, 2000 Greetings: Christmas has come twice this season. There is a FREE INHALATION EXPOSURE SYSTEM waiting for someone. With qualifications, it is free for the asking (we are told). See the surplus equipment section below. This is the fourth monthly issue of the inhalation toxicology newsletter. A discussion forum is offered as well. Topics related to inhalation toxicology and related biotechnology are listed each month. Submissions should early and before the end of each month to assure minimal publication delay. To add or have your name deleted from our subscriber list, see the section entitled, Additions, Changes and Removals, at the end of this message. If you find this forum useful, send our web address or a copy of this e-mail to a colleague. Inhalation Toxicology Forum Bench Mark Exposure Dose The benchmark dose or benchmark concentration (BMC) provides an estimate of a standardized toxicological dose or concentration, one that that has the potential to replace the No Observed Adverse Effect Level (NOAEL). The derivation of the inhalation reference concentration (RfC) has historically used the NOAEL with uncertainty factors in order to estimate a daily [allowable] exposure that is intended to protect the human population against harmful effects of a substance over a lifetime. Arlene Weiss summarizes some of these points in her abbreviated comment which is found at: http://www.inhalation.net/benchmark.html Dry Powder Dispersal Technologies The generation of powders and fibers from solid requires a degree of skill and some specialized equipment. A brief recitation and some sources is offered by Doug Cooper at: http://www.inhalation.net/drypowder.htm Calendar of Upcoming Events For the latest events, please visit: http://www.inhalation.net/calendar.htm Surplus Equipment A large San Francisco based pharmaceutical firm reports the availability of an InTox nose only exposure system. It is available "as is" to a University or to "not for profit" group. Address your requests to the editor and they will be forwarded to the donor company. Comments and Letters to the Editor The Editorial staff welcomes your questions and comments. Send e-mail and any news articles to the Editor at Sponsors Additions, Changes and Removals If a colleague wishes to be added to the mailing list, send email to: Place the word "SUBSCRIBE" in the subject line.
