December, 1999

Greetings and Happy Holidays:

This is the third issue of the inhalation newsletter and discussion forum. In this issue, we address several topics related to inhalation toxicology and biotechnology. The next newsletter will appear in Mid-January and thereafter, usually around the middle of each month. Submissions intended for timely publication should arrive at the end of each month to assure no more than one month publication delay.

To have your name deleted from our list, see the section entitled, Additions, Changes and Removals, at the end of this message. If you find this service to be useful, send our web address or a copy of this e-mail to a colleague.

Inhalation Toxicology Forum

Dusts and Powders

These are used for a variety of purposes in toxicology. Some are drug carriers and excipients while others may represent a useful challenge/stimulus to the respiratory tract. It is sometimes difficult to find reliable sources. Also, publications that discuss such materials may be obscure. Therefore, we offer the following sources and citations to this area. The text can be found at:

Habers (Law) Rule

This concept, sometimes called a law but more correctly, Habers Rule, can be useful in estimating the toxic potency of various concentration and exposure time relationships. That is, the C times T relationship can sometimes be used as a dose-surrogate. A recent review by Dr. Hanspeter Witschi discusses the origin and limits of this concept. Arlene Weiss and Doug Cooper offer some additional commentary. These are found at:

http://www.inhalation.net/habers_rule.htm

Fibroblast Sheath

New knowledge about the role of underlying tissues and structural/functional/supportive elements in the lung makes the understanding of their cellular interaction important to inhalation toxicology. Our colleague and resident artist, Dr. Susan Shami, describes some of the work performed by her colleagues at the University of California, Davis. Her illustrated mini-review can be found at:

http://www.inhalation.net/fibroblast_sheath.htm

In Memoriam

With sadness, we report the passing of our colleague and friend, Dr. Arvydas Juozaitis. He was injured and later died as a result of an automobile accident; two colleagues traveling with him were also injured but they survived. All three were returning from a field trip in Lithuania when they were struck head-on by a drunk driver. His mentor and friend, Dr. Klaus Willeke, prepared the memorial note. The note can be found at:

Surplus Equipment

If you are aware of a colleague or a facility that has inhalation technology that is no longer needed or if you have a need for equipment that is not available within your laboratory or institution, please let us know about your need. We hope to use this forum as a means to help you find what you require. Requests and inquiries can be kept in confidence if desired.

Comments and Letters to the Editor

The Editorial staff welcomes your questions and comments. Send e-mail and any news articles to the Editor at:

jaegerr@idt.net

If your research group or institution has an interest in being listed or other wise identified with a special skill, send your request to a member of the editorial staff. We don't expect to carry advertising but support and sponsorship are welcome. A nice word helps too and for those sending them, we thank you.

Sponsorship and Site Development

This site was designed by Dr. Doug Cooper using Microsoft's FRONT PAGE web authoring software. Dr. Susan Shami, our resident respiratory biologist and artist director uses Adobe software; she is responsible for graphics and design. Support and space are provided by CH Technologies (USA) Inc. They design and manufacture a variety of inhalation toxicology and biotechnology related systems. Additional information is available at:

http://www.toxics.com

Support also comes from Environmental Medicine Inc. They are found at:
